An error. I have to confess that I was mislead by the nominal power of this machine by contrast with the LE (15HP compared to 8) and the fact that it was restored by the king of Viceroy restorations, Malcolm Skinner. So confident was I that I paid probably twice what I should have done and flew to Scotland to ride it back – without even trying it. Yes, ‘brains’ and ‘examined’ spring to mind.

It was an interesting ride, particularly after I discovered that it would do no more than 40 uphill and 50 on the flat. Since then I have checked and corrected every item on the bike – including some quite serious issues like a choke that was not opening properly – but without any improvement. I think the next (last?) thing to try is a replacement engine, if I can find one.

Apart from the performance it is very heavy, does not handle well, grounding on roundabouts, and has no brakes to speak of. Yes, an error.
