Mother

Maggie’s mother, Pearl, was, with her grandfather, Arthur Edwards (known as ‘the Duke’ in the valleys of South Wales) the major formative influence upon her. Dying of cancer at only 36 her support for the community is celebrated in the following newspaper reports. The scale of the entries – front and back pages, albeit in local papers – give some idea of the respect she commanded.

Pictures from the local papers.
Left: the Glamorgan Advertiser. The caption reads:
In the icy driving rain they gathered sadly at the graveside to pay their last respects.
Right: The Glamorgan Gazette (her employer). The caption reads:
The scene on Tuesday, Caerau’s saddest winter’s day ……

Pearl met Maggie’s father, Tommy, in Berlin after the war. I believe that they were married there. Her father referred to him aS “That slug”. Although I suspect that nobody would have been good enough for his elder daughter!
